Presented by Deena Abbe, Ph.D., Greg Haggerty, Ph.D., and Art Popp, Ph.D.

Sport psychology is a growing avenue for new opportunities as well as bumps in the road.  We will describe new developments in professional sports, collegiate sports, the high school and youth levels.  Social-emotional skills (core life skills) are a focus along with establishing a positive climate for learning and performance. Mental health factors and services are essential at all levels.    We will also note strategies to personally improve your game, whether it's golf, tennis, pickleball or coaching a youth soccer or softball team.

Deena Abbe, PhD is recognized as a leading clinical psychologist specializing in infants, children, and adolescents. Her areas of expertise include Feeding Disorders, Metabolic and Gastrointestinal Concerns, ADHD, Tourette’s Syndrome, Autism, Social Phobias, and Aggression. In addition to clinical work, Dr. Abbe is a clinical supervisor for graduate students at The Krasner Center at Stony Brook University.

Dr. Popp also coached junior and senior inter-town boys for the Hewlett-Lawrence Blue Star Soccer Club. From 1992-2002, Dr. Popp practiced psychotherapy with Hewlett Counseling Center. From 2002 until retiring, he built his own private practice specializing in children and adolescents. Dr. Popp has been presenting about social-emotional learning and athletics for a number of years. This spring, he will be speaking to school psychologists of SCPA about the viability of social-emotional learning programs.
