May 2024 Workshop: Assessing and Treating Eating Disorders: A Review of APA Guidelines
Friday, May 03, 2024, 7:15 PM - 9:15 PM EDT
Category: Workshops

Presented by Farhan Husain, MD MSc and Patricia Osborne, Ph.D.

Eating disorders are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and can greatly affect psychosocial functioning. However, trainees and experienced clinicians sometimes report decreased confidence in working with this population due to patients being medically complex and/or ambivalent about treatment. We recently developed a new formal eating disorders course for our psychiatry residency training program at Stony Brook Medicine, based on the updated 2023 American Psychiatric Association practice guidelines. This presentation will cover information from our course, including background information on eating disorders, APA guidelines on assessment and treatment (both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy), CBT, and family-based treatment. We will also discuss clinical tips and strategies for engaging patients and working with ambivalence.

Dr. Farhan Husain completed his Psychiatry residency training at Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, NY., and is currently serving as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow at the same institution. He earned his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Science in Biomedical Research from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 2020. Dr. Husain is recognized for his special interest in leadership and teaching roles, such as serving as a presenter at the annual Neuroscience Symposium, Grand Rounds speaker at Stony Brook University Hospital, a guest instructor at the Stony Brook Renaissance School of Medicine, and virtual presenter at the PsychSIGN Residency Fair. He enjoys collaborating with colleagues to enhance the educational experience and quality of residency training programs.

Dr. Patricia Osborne obtained her PhD in clinical psychology from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University and completed a two-year U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs MIRECC fellowship at Mount Sinai and the Bronx VA. She has worked at academic medical centers in New York City, Boston, and Houston, Texas. Dr. Osborne is currently a psychologist and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Stony Brook Medicine. She serves as Associate Program Director and CBT Director for the Stony Brook Psychiatry Residency Program and Co-Chair of her Department’s Suicide Postvention Committee. In 2023, she developed a new PGY-1/PGY-2 residency eating disorders course (which she co-teaches) and an eating disorders didactic for medical students. She enjoys supervising psychiatry, psychology, and social work trainees. Her publications and presentations focus on severe and persistent mental illness, chronic health conditions, eating disorders, and psychiatry residency training.
