January 2023 Workshop: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) - An Introduction
Friday, January 06, 2023, 7:15 PM - 9:15 PM EDT
Category: Workshops

Presented by Richard Pitch, MD

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, non-systemic device which delivers strong, pulsed magnetic fields to induce an electric current in the cerebral cortex.  It has been used to study brain functions in normal and pathological conditions.  When used and an antidepressant, TMS produces clinical benefit without the systems adverse effects associated with medications.  It has no adverse cognitive effects.  It was cleared by the FDA for clinical use in the treatment of Major Depression, and more recently for other conditions (migraines, OCD, and smoking cessation).   This presentation will introduce the history of TMS, how it works, indications and contraindications for clinical use, patient selection, and the potential risks and benefits of TMS treatment.

Richard Pitch is a board-certified psychiatrist in full-time private practice on Long Island, NY. In addition to office-based psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, he has been providing TMS services in private practice since June 2010. As the medical director of Long Island Neurocare Therapy, he provides TMS and neurofeedback. He is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a founding member and fellow of the Clinical TMS Society (CTMSS). He is currently the secretary of CTMSS.

Dr. Pitch received his medical degree at the State University of NY in Brooklyn in 1991 and completed his residency and chief residency in psychiatry at Hillside Hospital in 1995. He received his initial TMS training at The Berenson-Allen Center for Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (Harvard Medical School) under the direction of Alvaro-Pascual-Leone. He is currently the medical director of Long Island Neurocare Therapy in Medford and Melville, NY, which provides TMS for Major Depression and neurofeedback for ADHD and insomnia.
