September 2022 Workshop: How to Start and Manage a Psychotherapy Practice

This workshop will cover all the tools needed and concerns involved in working in a private practice, including: activities and skills needed for practice, such as communication, intake procedures, assessment and  evaluation, treatment planning, prevention, recordkeeping. We will also touch upon how to market your practice and develop a niche; clinical issues; business issues; HIPAA and the SAFE Act; as well as the need for malpractice insurance. The panelists will leave time to answer questions.

Dr. Barbara Fontana has been in private practice since 1979. She has been leading and presenting this workshop for SCPA biannually since 2005. In addition to being a licensed psychologist, she is an Advanced Clinician in Imago Relationship Therapy. She developed a niche working with couples twenty years ago and successfully got her website consistently on page one of google searches for couples counseling. She has recently transitioned from a full-time practice serving adults and couples to a part-time practice primarily working with couples.

Dr. Deena Abbe is a licensed psychologist. She has a private practice specializing in infants and children. Her areas of expertize include ADHD, Tourette’s Syndrome, Autism, social phobias, and aggression.

Dr. Steven Hartman is a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist. He is employed in the Sachem School District.  He has had a part-time private practice for many years working primarily with children, adolescents and their families. 

Dr. Laura Van Schaick-Harman is a licensed psychologist, certified school psychologist and a Board Certified - Telemental Health provider. She has a private practice serving children, adolescents and adults. She offers online therapy services in addition to office-based services. She has a great deal of experience using social media both clinically and as a marketing tool.
