Suffolk County Psychological Association is proud to release a very special CD, entitled “Voices of Our Children: Messages of Hope and Healing.” This CD is a compilation of original poems, short stories, and songs written by children in Suffolk County, New York.
This creative material expresses the children’s innermost thoughts and feelings regarding September 11, 2001. The project was started to help children through the healing process from this national tragedy. Well over two hundred and fifty pieces of creative expressions were received from children ages seven to eighteen. Thirty-four of these submissions were chosen for inclusion on the CD. These “messages” from the children reflect the “healing” process that all of us have had to go through. The CD starts out with poetry, stories, and songs that reflect the shock and numbing horror that occurred immediately after September 11th. The material transitions into a reflection of anger, sadness, and anxiety that occurred after the “numbing” dissipated. Finally, the CD finishes with a series of reflections that speak to the sense of hope and healing, and the true strength of our young people. These children have shared their innermost thoughts and sentiments in an effort to stimulate similar sharing among other young people.
This CD, produced in both audio and macro-media formats, was distributed to every school psychologist in Suffolk County, free of charge, in the hope that it would assist these professionals in their effort to provide ongoing support services to children in schools.
The words and lyrics of the children’s compositions can be viewed
on this website. We are sure you will be surprised at the depth and intensity of emotions that these young people express. Please direct any comments or questions to Dr. John Kelly at
