“It’s easier to build healthy children than to fix broken men,” said Frederick Douglass, and athletic teams give us that opportunity. Under the right conditions and learning climate, coaches can teach, model and reinforce key skills. These skills can include brief meditation, recognizing disruptive emotions, planning, supporting teammates and listening. Psychologists can help coaches teach these skills. We can also enhance the learning climate for our players by encouraging attainable goals, and re-framing the meaning of the score on the scoreboard.

Dr. Art Popp was a school psychologist in the New York City system for 25 years. During that time he also was a therapist at Lynbrook Counseling Center and then developed his own practice specializing in children and teens. Most recently Art has been coaching high school varsity girls’ flag football and boys football.
