Classroom management in classes with students who learn differently

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
Students with special needs often present special behavioral challenges in the classroom setting. This workshop is targeted for school psychologists, social workers and anyone who works in supporting teachers and students in classrooms that present with behavioral challenges. We will discuss classroom wide behavioral management plans, specific strategies for unusual learners and troubleshooting common behavioral challenges that are often encountered when teaching students with special needs. Practical, hands-on ideas and specific interventions will be presented and discussed.

By the conclusion of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. plan and use classroom-wide behavioral management plans;
  2. modify general classroom management strategies to fit the needs of exceptional learners;
  3. recognize and describe the behavioral presentation of specific disorders prevalent in classrooms (such as ADHD, ASD, LD);
  4. describe specific strategies aimed for exceptional learners;
  5. list and describe general themes that are critical for the success of exceptional learners as they progress through school (such as aides involvement, independence, prompt dependence, social success, etc.)

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Sagit Vishnia, Psy.D. is a NYS licensed clinical psychologist. She was a staff psychologist at the Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities at Stony Brook University for eight years, and has been in private practice for the past 12 years. She is now the director of Three Village Psychological Services in Smithtown NY. Dr. Vishnia is a member of the American Psychological Association, a Board member of the Suffolk County Psychological Association and the county representative to the NYS Psychological Association’s council. She has extensive experience in working with adults, adolescents and children who present with a variety of difficulties and needs, including autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Dr. Vishnia works with individuals and their families in a variety of settings, including clinic, home and school settings, and provides diagnostic evaluations, psychotherapy, consultation and training to parents, teachers and other professionals.
