How to Start and Build a Psychotherapy Practice

The target audience for this presentation is mental health professionals who are in clinical practice. The workshop will be given on an introductory level.

This workshop will cover the topic of how to start a private practice, how to market your practice and develop a niche. Clinical issues, business and marketing issues, and the future of private practice will also be addressed.

By the conclusion of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. describe three ways to market a practice;
  2. enumerate three important elements to address in the initial session with a new patient;
  3. articulate what information is required to be included in each session note;
  4. explain the basic principles and concrete requirements of HIPAA.

Dr. Barbara Fontana has been in private practice since 1979. She has been leading and presenting this workshop for SCPA biannually since 2005. In addition to being a licensed psychologist, she is an Advanced Clinician in Imago Relationship Therapy. She transitioned to a part-time practice at the end of 2016 and now only sees couples.

Dr. Deena Abbe has a private practice and is recognized as a leading clinical psychologist specializing in infant and children. Her areas of expertise include ADHD, Tourette’s Syndrome, Autism, Social Phobias, and Aggression.

Dr. Steven Hartman is a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist. He is currently employed as a School Psychologist in the Sachem Central School District and is in private practice as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Deer Park, NY. He works primarily with children, adolescents and their families.

Dr. Laura Van Schaick-Harman is a licensed psychologist, certified school psychologist and a Distance Credentialed Counselor. She has a private practice serving children, adolescents, and adults. She offers online therapy services in addition to more traditional modes of therapy. She has a great deal of experience using social media both clinically and a marketing tool.
